Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death among adults in the U.S. and the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-24 and unfortunately rising.
Do YOU know the warning signs or will you recognize them in your family member, co-worker, or friend? Threats or talks about killing themselves, suicidal ideation, can begin with seemingly harmless thoughts like “I wish I wasn’t here anymore” but can become more overt and dangerous and should be recognized as a psychiatric emergency.
Seen any of the following:
Increased alcohol and/or drug use
More aggressive behavior
Seeming obsession w talking, writing or thinking about death
Exhibiting impulsive or reckless behavior
Socially withdrawn from friends, family and the community
Dramatic mood swings

Is There Substance to Their Chatter?
Moreso, any person exhibiting these behaviors should get care immediately:
Putting their affairs in order and giving away their possessions
Saying goodbye to friends or family
Mood shifts from despair to calm
Planning, plotting, looking around to buy, borrow or steal the tools they need to ‘finish the job,’ such as a firearm or prescription meds.
Unsure? Call a licensed mental health professional to help assess risk. #nami
